Wheeler Lake Bass Fishing, Season by Season

Alabama's second-largest lake and the quiet one on the Tennessee River. Wheeler sits between Guntersville and Pickwick and gets a fraction of their pressure β€” partly because it lost the grass that once made it king, and partly because nobody has told the crowds it's coming back.

The Lake That Lost Its Grass

Wheeler stretches 60 miles from Guntersville Dam down to Wheeler Dam near Rogersville, covering 68,300 acres. It's Alabama's second-largest reservoir, only slightly smaller than Guntersville just upstream, and it sits roughly halfway between Birmingham and Nashville.

It was once king. In its peak years Wheeler outfished Guntersville, and the Decatur Flats β€” the stretch from the Interstate 65 bridge down to Browns Ferry β€” was arguably the best water on the entire Tennessee River. Then the grass disappeared. Every local has a theory, from industrial discharge to spraying, and nobody knows for certain. The bass scattered and the lake has never quite got back to what it was.

What that leaves is a genuinely good fishery that gets far less traffic than its famous neighbours, with the same ledges, flats and bars connecting to the river channel. Some vegetation has returned. And there's a component the others don't offer in the same way: smallmouth fishing here is on the upswing, common from Decatur west and especially from Elk River down.

Break it into four sections. The tailrace below Guntersville Dam, small and entirely dependent on release schedules. A riverine stretch down to the I-65 bridge at Decatur, with current breaks on isolated rock and wood. The Decatur Flats. And a lower end of steep banks, bluff walls, long points and the better ledges on the lake.

Seasonal Patterns

Current, Flats and Ditches

Four patterns cover the year. Each one pairs the technique with the baits we'd actually tie on.

Spring

Creeks First, Then the Flats

Spring pushes everyone to the backs of the creeks β€” Flint Creek and the Elk River become magnets for spawning largemouth, holding in water willow and around shallow stumps. Higher spring water and increased current activate baitfish along the channel ledges at the same time, which makes this the most productive stretch of the year for power fishing.

The Pattern Work the creek backs for spawning fish and the channel ledges for the ones still feeding. On the Decatur Flats, look for the subtle ditches and depressions only a foot or two deeper than everything around them β€” bass use them as highways to move up onto the flats as the sun warms the water.
Summer

Fish When the Water Moves

Summer on Wheeler comes down to one question: is TVA generating? With current, bass set up predictably on ledges and current breaks. Without it, they suspend and scatter across those same ledges and become nearly impossible to pattern. Wheeler isn't a classic ledge lake like Pickwick or Guntersville, but a real share of the population goes deep once it heats up.

The Pattern Check the generation schedule before you launch, and note that you're accounting for releases at both ends of the lake. When water is moving, drag a big worm or a heavy football jig across the ledges and shell beds near Decatur, and downstream on the sloping flats and humps between Elk River and First Creek. Matted grass and laydowns hold the shallow fish in bright conditions.
Fall

Shad, Grass Edges and Current Breaks

Autumn spreads fish through the water column as shad move and current keeps working. Grass edges near river channel swings, current-swept rocky points and boulders, and barge tie-offs and marina areas that break the flow all hold fish. Expect a mixed depth pattern rather than one clean answer.

The Pattern Fish the grass edges where they meet current, then check the rocky points and any structure creating a break. Fall on Wheeler rewards covering water and staying flexible β€” shallow and deep fish are both active, and the ones you find will depend on where the flow is that day.
Winter

Riprap, Bluffs and the Tailrace

Winter concentrates fish on the deeper, rockier lower end, where steep banks and bluff walls put deep water close to cover. The Decatur area is riprap-heavy junk fishing, much of it on the main lake where current washes against it. The upper tailrace fishes like a river all winter β€” eddies, current seams and rock piles.

The Pattern Work riprap where current is hitting it and bluff walls where the drop is sharp. The largest smallmouth on the lake sit in the eddy water just off the main current at the lower end. Slow down, and let the current position your bait rather than fighting it.
Where to Start

Wheeler Lake Access

Sixty miles and four distinct personalities. Pick a section and learn its current.

Decatur Flats

From the I-65 bridge down toward Browns Ferry. Big flats bait and bass roam, offshore ledges, and shallow cover along the banks. Look for ditches a foot or two deeper than the surrounding flat β€” those are the travel routes.

The Lower End

Steep banks, bluff walls, long points and the best pure ledge fishing on the lake, plus the heaviest smallmouth. Eddy water just off the main current is where the big ones sit.

Guntersville Dam Tailrace

Small, and entirely dependent on the release schedule. When they're pulling water it's classic tailrace fishing β€” eddies, seams and rock piles β€” and it's a long run from Decatur or Ditto Landing.

Questions

Wheeler Lake Bass Fishing FAQ

What happened to the grass on Wheeler Lake?

Nobody knows for certain. The vegetation on the famed Decatur Flats disappeared in the 2000s and the bass scattered with it. Local theories range from industrial pollution along the Decatur riverbank to spraying. Some grass has since returned and the lake is rebounding, but it hasn't reclaimed its former standing.

Is Wheeler worth fishing with Guntersville and Pickwick nearby?

That's exactly why it's worth fishing. Wheeler has the same ledges, flats and bars connecting to the Tennessee River channel as its famous neighbours, and gets a fraction of the pressure. It's the sleeper of the chain.

How important is TVA generation on Wheeler?

It's the single most important variable. With current, bass position on ledges and current breaks and become patternable. Without it, they suspend and scatter and the same spots go dead. Check the schedule before you plan a day β€” and account for releases at both ends of the lake.

Are there smallmouth in Wheeler Lake?

Yes, and the fishery is improving. Smallmouth are common from Decatur to the west end and especially from the Elk River down. Northern-strain spotted bass are also present, mostly near the main channel. Largemouth remain the primary species.

What are the ditches on the Decatur Flats?

Shallow depressions running across the flats, often only a foot or two deeper than the water around them. Bass use them as travel corridors to move up onto the flats and back off again. Finding them is worth more than covering the flat itself.

What baits work best on Wheeler Lake?

Spring is lipless crankbaits and jigs in the creek backs and on the flats. Summer is big worms and heavy football jigs on ledges when current is running. Fall follows shad along grass edges and current breaks. Winter is riprap and bluff walls at the lower end. Our full bait lineup covers all four.

Do I need a fishing license for Wheeler Lake?

Yes. An Alabama fishing license is required, available through the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Check current size and creel limits before you go.

Level Rods

Long Casts on Moving Water

Dragging a heavy jig across a ledge in current for hours is a specific kind of work, and so is picking a bite out of a fast-moving seam. Level Rods builds models with the length to hold bottom contact in flow and the sensitivity to tell a rock from a smallmouth when the current is doing half the pulling.
