A Lake Built to Grow Big Bass
Stonewall Jackson Lake is an impoundment of the West Fork River in Lewis County, completed in 1990 by the US Army Corps of Engineers. It covers about 2,630 acres with 82 miles of shoreline, a short drive southeast of Interstate 79 at Weston.
What makes it different from most Corps projects is that it was built for recreation as well as water retention, and that decision shows on the bottom. The deepest channels were left timbered during construction, deliberately, to provide the habitat that grows trophy bass. Three decades on, that has worked exactly as intended.
It is frequently cited as the best largemouth lake in West Virginia, and no other water in the state is more likely to produce a ten-pound fish. The timber-filled coves are the reason, and there are a great many of them along the main arm as well as up the smaller Skin Creek and Little Skin Creek arms.
The regulations have an unusual history worth understanding. The lake was managed for years under strict catch-and-release rules. In 2013 those were changed to allow the harvest of six bass per day, only one of which may exceed eighteen inches. The change was not a relaxation for its own sake — it was aimed at controlling a growing population of invasive Alabama spotted bass, which have the potential to displace the trophy largemouth fishery. Musky here carry their own rule: one fish per day, everything under fifty-two inches released.
In practice that means the state would rather you kept a few small spotted bass than released them. It is one of the few lakes on this site where harvesting fish is the conservation-minded choice.

The Trophy Window
Prespawn and postspawn are when this lake gives up its biggest fish. Largemouth head shallow to spawn from April with the spawn in full swing by May, moving into the timber-filled coves and the shoreline cover. If a ten-pounder comes out of West Virginia, this is the water and this is the month.
Deep Timber and Early Creels
Early summer produces daily limits by late morning, which is the local reputation and a fair one. Fish hold on the deeper standing timber along the old channels and around the shoreline wood, and the lake is small enough that finding them does not take all day. Recreational traffic builds through the warm months given the resort.
Shad in the Coves
Autumn moves bait into the coves and the creek arms and the bass follow. It is comfortable fishing on a quiet lake, and the timber that holds fish all year becomes considerably easier to fish as the recreational traffic disappears. Both Skin Creek arms are worth a day.
Deep Wood, Empty Lake
Winter concentrates fish on the deepest timber and the old river channel, and the lake empties of everyone. It is slow fishing that produces good average size, and it runs straight into the prespawn window that makes this lake's reputation. West Virginia winters are genuine, so pick your days.
Stonewall Jackson Lake Access

The Timber-Filled Coves
The reason this lake produces the fish it does. Deep channels were left timbered on purpose during construction, and the coves along the main arm hold that wood in fishable depths. Pitch to individual trunks and work them properly — this is not water to cover quickly.
Skin Creek and Little Skin Creek
The two smaller arms, warming first in spring and holding bait in autumn. More sheltered than the main arm and less pressured, and both hold the same standing timber that makes the rest of the lake work.
The Old West Fork Channel
The deep water running the length of the lake, lined with the timber left standing during construction. Where the fish go in summer heat and winter cold, and the most reliable structure on the lake when the shallow bite is off.
