Presque Isle Bay sits behind the sand peninsula that curves out from Erie into Lake Erie, in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania. It is known for monster smallmouth and it holds big largemouth too, supporting a very healthy population in the two to six pound range.
The value of the bay is shelter. Lake Erie is genuinely dangerous water — shallow for a Great Lake, quick to build steep waves, and capable of turning a calm morning into something serious. Presque Isle Bay is protected behind the peninsula, which means you can fish Great Lakes-quality bass on days when the open lake is out of the question.
The habitat is a mix that suits both species: weed beds, sand, rock, drop-offs, marina structure and dock walls. Smallmouth relate to the harder bottom and the deeper edges; largemouth use the vegetation. Both grow large on the same rich Lake Erie forage base.
The regulations here differ from inland Pennsylvania and it matters. On Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay and its tributaries the harvest season closes 31 December with a fifteen-inch minimum and four fish daily — against a twelve-inch minimum and six fish on most inland waters. The harvest season runs to 31 December, which gives Pennsylvania anglers a longer window here than on any inland water. After that, northwest Pennsylvania winter takes the bay and it freezes. December fishing is genuinely possible in mild years and genuinely miserable otherwise.

Public ramps serve the bay from Erie and from Presque Isle State Park on the peninsula. The city of Erie covers everything else, and the sheltered water means launching is practical on days the open lake is not.
