Ten thousand acres between Chattanooga and the Alabama line, sitting quietly between two more famous neighbours — until February 2026, when it produced the biggest largemouth ever caught in Tennessee. Nickajack is the state's hot lake, and it holds its water level all year.
The Small Lake That Broke the Record
Nickajack is a TVA reservoir on the Tennessee River just downstream of Chattanooga, covering about 10,370 acres with 192 miles of shoreline. It is the only dam in the TVA system built specifically to replace an existing one — the privately built Hales Bar Dam of 1913, which leaked incurably through its soft limestone foundation. Nickajack Dam was completed in 1967 and Hales Bar was retired.
The single most useful thing to know about fishing here is that the water level barely moves. Unlike most TVA reservoirs, which run substantial seasonal drawdowns, Nickajack holds remarkably consistent levels year round. Cover that is productive in May is still there and still at the same depth in November, which makes learning this lake far less work than learning its neighbours.
It sits between Chickamauga upstream and Guntersville downstream, both of which get vastly more attention. That is changing. TWRA began stocking Florida-strain largemouth fingerlings here in 2015 as part of an expanded programme across several Tennessee River reservoirs — the same programme that transformed Chickamauga starting in 2000 — and eleven years later Nickajack produced the state record.
The pattern from Chickamauga suggests that record was not a fluke. Florida-strain stocking there took roughly a decade to show, then produced sustained results rather than a single fish. Nickajack is at about the same point in that curve now, and local guides report the prespawn producing multiple eight-pound fish in a season.
The fishery itself is Tennessee River water: grass, current, ledges and rock. Vegetation is the primary shallow cover, current from TVA generation positions fish, and the lake is small enough to learn properly in a few trips — which on this river is a genuine luxury.

Darren Nunley — A Contour Change, and Two Kinds of Grass
A guide had put a party on a pair of eight-pounders in a shallow grass spot the previous morning, and lost another the same size himself. He called a friend of twenty years and they launched at sunrise the next day, running straight to the waypoint.
The spot was specific in a way worth copying: a pocket where a contour change met the junction of two different types of vegetation. Not a grass line, not a depth change — both, in the same place. That intersection is the pattern.
Nunley was swimming a half-ounce green pumpkin bladed jig with a paddle-style trailer on seventeen-pound fluorocarbon when the rod loaded up around eight in the morning. The guide initially thought he was hung in grass. There was no vicious strike and the fish never jumped. It boiled the surface, turned sideways, and both men understood what they were looking at.
The fish weighed 15 pounds 7½ ounces at 27⅞ inches. TWRA confirmed it on 11 May 2026 after genetic testing, ending a record that had stood since 2015 and moving the crown one reservoir downstream from Chickamauga.
Grass, Current and Stable Water

Prespawn, and the Biggest Fish of the Year
February and March are the months. The state record came on 28 February, and guides here report multiple eight-pound fish through the prespawn in a normal season. Fish stage on contour changes adjacent to shallow grass and move up to feed on warming trends, then drop back on a front. The spawn follows into April in the pockets and protected shallows.
Grass Early, Ledges When the Water Moves
Summer splits the lake as it does everywhere on this river. Matted and submerged grass holds fish shallow, best worked at first light before the recreational traffic gets going, and the ledges and channel edges hold schools when TVA is pulling water. Because the level stays stable, the grass here is more dependable through the summer than on drawdown reservoirs.
Shad Move, Everything Follows
Autumn brings shad into the creeks and pockets and the bass go with them. On a lake this size you can cover the productive water in a day, which makes finding the bait far easier than on Chickamauga or Guntersville. Grass edges near deeper water are the seam to work.
Deep Structure and Current Breaks
Cold water pushes fish onto deep structure and current breaks, and they school tightly. The stable water level means the deep structure you found in summer is exactly where you left it. This is also the run-up to the prespawn window that produced the record, so late winter is worth watching closely for the first warming trend.
Nickajack Lake Access
Access is straightforward on a lake this size. Marion County Park at Jasper has ramps and a fishing pier, with additional ramps around Nickajack Dam and along the Tennessee River between Chattanooga and the Alabama line. Chattanooga is the nearest city for everything else.
The Shallow Grass Flats
Where the state record came from, and where the prespawn giants live. Look for pockets combining a contour change with a junction between two vegetation types — that specific intersection is the pattern, not simply the presence of grass.
The Ledges and Channel Edges
Tennessee River structure, and the summer game when TVA is generating. Smaller in scale than Chickamauga's ledge system, which makes it far quicker to learn and far less crowded when the current is running.
The Dam and the Tailwater
Nickajack Dam at the lower end and the Chickamauga Dam tailwater at the upper end both concentrate fish where current is strongest. Smallmouth are a genuine bonus in the harder current, and the tailwater fishes well when the main lake is flat.
