A Lake Built Around One Baitfish
Lake Murray was formed by damming the Saluda River west of Columbia, and at nearly 49,000 acres it's one of the Southeast's genuine heavyweights. But size isn't what defines it. Blueback herring — an introduced, open-water baitfish — drive the fishery almost completely. Bass here don't relate to cover the way they do on a typical reservoir. They follow bait, roam offshore, and show up wherever the herring are.
That changes how you fish it. Shoreline that looks perfect will be empty while a nondescript main-lake point stacks fish, because the point happens to sit where herring are moving. The lower end, roughly Dreher Island down to the dam, is the classic schooling water. Up the Big Saluda and Little Saluda arms, the lake behaves a little more like a conventional river reservoir.
One more Murray quirk worth knowing: generations of local anglers have sunk cane piles and brush on offshore structure. Those man-made piles hold suspended bass through the hottest part of summer, and they're a large part of why the lake fishes well when the shallows shut down. Most aren't marked. Finding them is the local edge.

The Herring Spawn Changes Everything
Bass spawn shallow like they do anywhere, but the event that matters most on Murray comes right after: the herring spawn. Herring move up to spawn starting in the warmer backs of creeks and progressing out to the main lake as the water warms, and every bass in the system keys on it. Hard clay points and shallow gravel become the highest-percentage water on the lake.
Cane Piles and Suspended Fish
As the herring pull out to deeper, cooler water, the bass go with them. This is when Murray's cane piles earn their reputation — bass suspend over and around them through the heat, often well off the bottom. Points, channel edges and ledges in the 15 to 35 foot range hold the better fish through the day, with a shallow window early and late.
Schooling Fish on Points and Humps
Fall on Murray is the schooling show. Bass push herring to the surface over main-lake points and humps, particularly on the lower end from Dreher Island to the dam, and the fireworks can happen anywhere at any time. As the season progresses, more of the bait pushes into the backs of creeks and coves, and the bass follow.
Clear Water, Slow Hands, Big Fish
Murray has a real reputation as a cold-weather fishery — Field & Stream ranked it the No. 2 winter bass lake in the country in 2025. The water clears up, the herring group tight, and the bass that eat are often the better ones. It is not a numbers season, but it is a big-fish season.

What are the cane piles on Lake Murray?
Man-made brush piles that local anglers have sunk on offshore structure over many years. They hold suspended bass through summer, when the shallow bite dies off, and they're a big part of why the lake fishes well in the heat. Most are unmarked, so finding them with electronics is a genuine local advantage.
Why does blueback herring matter so much on Lake Murray?
Herring are an open-water, roaming baitfish, and Murray's bass follow them rather than relating tightly to shoreline cover. That means good-looking bank can be empty while a plain main-lake point holds fish. Locating bait beats locating structure here more often than on most reservoirs.
