45,000 acres of Chattahoochee River running 85 miles up the Alabama–Georgia line, and the place where tournament bass fishing began. B.A.S.S. held its first event here in 1968. The lake has been earning the nickname "Bass Capital of the World" ever since.
Where the Whole Sport Started
Officially Walter F. George Reservoir and universally called Eufaula, this Corps of Engineers lake covers 45,181 acres and stretches about 85 miles north from the Walter F. George Lock and Dam, with 640 miles of shoreline along the Alabama–Georgia border south of Columbus.
For anyone who makes or buys tackle, this water matters more than most. In 1968, the year Ray Scott founded B.A.S.S., the very first tournament was held here. The town of Eufaula is home to Mann's Bait Company and to Humminbird Electronics — Tom Mann, a local, invented the Humminbird depth finder, the Little George tailspinner and the Mann's Jelly Worm. A fair amount of what sits in your boat traces back to this one lake.
The fishery itself is a lowland reservoir with shallow, grassy shoreline, docks and cypress. What makes it work is underneath: the river and creek channels wind through those flats and are joined by dozens of ditches, and every one of those junctions creates a ledge where bass can feed shallow and then drop back to hold until the next feeding window.
It still deserves the nickname. Eufaula holds excellent numbers of one to four pounders, plenty of five to eight pound fish, and still produces the occasional double-digit bass with some past twelve. It can take better than 26 pounds with five fish to win here.
What It Took to Win Here
Patterns that produced at the highest level on this lake, and the baits to fish them with.
Pake South — Falling Water, Two Baits
South entered late and knew almost nothing about the lake. He then posted 28-0, 24-10 and a 31-7 on the final day — the only thirty-pound bag of the tournament — for the third-heaviest winning weight in Bassmaster Opens history, and became only the fourth angler ever to win multiple Opens in a single season.
What made it work was a falling lake level. Dropping water concentrated the bass and lined up with their post-spawn movements, and he fished two things against that. For fish suspended on deeper structure he worked a soft minnow on light spinning gear. For the bigger fish sitting in shallow brush piles he put that down and picked up an urchin-style bait on heavier casting tackle.
The runner-up confirmed the pattern from the other direction — he caught his better fish close to takeoff, targeting shallow brush piles in four to eight feet, and boated an 8-15 largemouth doing it. On Eufaula, when the water drops, the brush is where the weight is.

A Spawn That Runs Three Months
The trigger here is 60 degrees, and because Eufaula stretches 85 miles the whole cycle can run from March into May. Bass stage on primary and secondary points off the creek channels, then migrate up those channels stopping on isolated brush piles — many of them put there by anglers — before reaching the textbook spawning flats that define this lowland reservoir.
Mats Early, River Ledges When the Water Moves
By summer the grass has matted and the bass have split. Some sit under the mats, and punching them in about five feet wherever there's live grass produces. The rest are on the current-driven ledges of the main river channel — and the single most useful thing you can know is when the Corps is generating, because current turns those ledges on.
Back to the Shallows, Then Back Out
Autumn pulls bass back into shallow water chasing shad, and the topwater, spinnerbait and crankbait fishing is as easy as Eufaula gets. Later in the season, as the deeper water cools, bait and bass move back out to ledges, channel edges, points and humps.
Slow, Deep, and Nobody Around
Hunting season empties Eufaula, which is part of the appeal. Bass hold deep on ledges and around any cover that retains heat, and they don't move much. Fishing extremely slowly on deep brush piles with big Texas-rigged worms is a proven cold-water approach here.

Cowikee Creek & Lakepoint State Park
The tournament hub, and rightly so. Shallow flats, submerged timber and holes dropping past 30 feet, all within reach. Fish the stumpy flats early and the deeper holes later in the day.
Bird Island
Near where Cowikee Creek meets the main channel, depths plunge to around 60 feet. Worth knowing when summer heat or a cold front pushes fish off the shallow structure.
Main River Ledges
The current-driven ledges of the Chattahoochee channel carry the summer fishing. Not glamorous, but when the Corps is generating they are the most reliable water on the lake.
