Big Water and a River With a Current
New York's share of Lake Erie is the eastern basin out of Buffalo and Dunkirk, and it connects to the Upper Niagara River, which drains the lake north toward the falls. Bassmaster treats the two together, and ranked them seventh in the country in 2024 and ninth in 2025 — behind only the St. Lawrence among New York waters.
The fishery is smallmouth, and they are big. Eastern Lake Erie's combination of deep clear water, rock and reef structure and an enormous goby and baitfish forage base produces the same kind of heavy brown fish that make the St. Lawrence famous, in water that sees rather less national attention.
The Upper Niagara is the other half and it fishes completely differently. Current is the organising factor: smallmouth stage on current breaks, and offshore structure that would be unremarkable on a lake becomes a feeding station when there is flow across it. A national event held on the Niagara turned on precisely that setup, with drop shots dominating the results.
Lake Erie is genuinely serious water. It is shallow for a Great Lake, which means it builds waves fast and steep, and a calm morning can turn dangerous by afternoon. Anglers fishing it need the boat, the forecast and the judgment to match.

Heavy Fish Before Winter
Autumn is when the biggest smallmouth of the year get caught on eastern Erie. Fish feed hard ahead of a severe winter and group tightly on structure. It is also the roughest time of year on the lake, and the weather rather than the fish decides how many days you get.
Closed
The season closes 30 November and western New York winter closes everything else. There is no open black bass season and the lake is not somewhere to be in December regardless. Plan trips inside the June to November window and expect weather to shorten it further.
