To qualify, a bass has to weigh over eight pounds. A third of the way into the year, more than a third of every qualifying trophy bass in Texas came out of a reservoir you can cross in a few minutes.
The top end matched the volume. Lawrence Lee of Tolar caught a pair of Legacy Class fish on 24 March — a 13.57 and a 13.10 — having already boated a 13.12 on 8 March.
The mechanism is the same one that drives every west Texas fishery: water. These lakes run in boom and bust cycles, and when a dry basin refills, newly flooded vegetation and terrestrial nutrients create an enormous productivity pulse. Bass grow fast, and a few years later the lake produces a run of giants. J.B. Thomas is in the middle of one now.

The headline catches came in March. Lawrence Lee of Tolar boated a 13.12-pounder on the eighth, then returned on the twenty-fourth and caught two Legacy Class fish in a day — a 13.57 and a 13.10.
