Harris Chain of Lakes Bass Fishing Guide
Harris Chain Bass Fishing, Season by Season
Eight connected lakes around Leesburg, joined by canals and locks, fertile enough to grow bass that make national fields work for a living. The Harris Chain rewards anglers who are willing to pick a lake and commit β and it has a habit of being won on techniques nobody expects in Florida.
Eight Lakes, One Puzzle
The Harris Chain runs through Lake County around Leesburg and Tavares, linking Lake Harris and Little Lake Harris, Griffin, Eustis, Dora, Beauclair, Carlton and Yale, with Lake Apopka reachable through a lock. Haynes Creek, the Dead River and the cypress-lined Dora Canal connect the pieces.
The water is fertile and mostly a stained green. Primary cover is Kissimmee grass, with eelgrass, peppergrass, lily pads, reeds, bulrush and cattails filling in, and hydrilla returning in quantity in recent years. The clear water on this chain is limited to the backs of the residential canals and the spring-fed creeks, so if you arrive expecting to sight fish you will need to adjust.
There is real history in the bottom here. A severe drought in 2001 and 2002 acted as an unplanned drawdown, regrowing miles of eelgrass, pads and shoreline cover, and reeds were replanted across large areas afterward. The chain has been rebuilding ever since, and the offshore grass that now dominates tournaments simply did not exist thirty years ago.
That offshore grass changed how the chain gets fished. Where it used to be a bank-and-Kissimmee-grass fishery, the winning water now is frequently out away from the shoreline: hydrilla patches, shellbars, brushpiles and hard spots. The 2024 Elite here was won on a seventy-five-yard shellbar with deep-water techniques imported from the Tennessee River.
Practical planning note. Moving between lakes means locking through, and the locks cost time β the Apopka lock takes three boats at a time. Anglers who can find something good close to the launch generally beat anglers who spend the day travelling.
What It Took to Win Here
Patterns that produced at the highest level on this water, and the baits to fish them with.
John Garrett β Tennessee River Techniques in Central Florida
A rookie in his third Elite event, fishing a Florida chain in April against a field of Florida specialists, decided not to fish it like Florida at all. Garrett spent the week offshore on Lake Carlton working a seventy-five-yard shellbar with a deep-diving crankbait, a Carolina rig, and a five-eighths-ounce white hair jig β a bait most of the field would not have had in the boat.
His routine was disciplined: box an early limit, then hunt big bites in a window that came later each morning. On the third day the big fish showed up on his electronics and refused the crankbait entirely. Rather than grind, he left them alone for forty-five minutes, then came back, stayed well off the spot and bomb-cast the hair jig at them. Three of his best fish that day came on it.
The insight underneath the win is that these were old, heavily pressured fish that had seen every standard Florida presentation many times over. Something genuinely unfamiliar got bites that nothing else could. He led all four days.
For contrast, the previous Elite here in February 2022 was won by Buddy Gross with 77-11 fishing a conventional prespawn pattern on the east and south end of Lake Harris. Both are live on this chain, depending entirely on the month.
Grass, Shellbars and Canals
Four patterns cover the year. Each one pairs the technique with the baits we'd actually tie on.
Shallow Cover, and Then Offshore
Prespawn and spawn on the chain runs from roughly February into April, and Little Lake Harris traditionally turns on first and holds bigger fish than the rest. Kissimmee grass, reeds and bulrush are the primary cover, generally in two to five feet over hard sand. Green Cove and the pockets are the flipping water. By April a lot of the field is postspawn and scattered, and the bigger females have already pulled out to thicker cover offshore.
Bluegill Beds and Early Topwater
Late spring into summer the bass switch their attention from shad to bluegill, and that is the overlooked window on this chain. Bluegill beds on sandy flats and eelgrass, shellcracker beds in the tighter canals and creek mouths β the neighbourhood giants come to them. Around the full moon in particular. Through the heat of the day the bite slows considerably, so the early and late windows carry the trip.
Everything Opens Up
Autumn scatters the fish across all eight lakes, and the honest assessment from local pros is that nobody wins this chain in the fall off one spot. Grass levels are typically at their best after a summer of growth, and the fish relate to it throughout the water column rather than stacking anywhere obvious. It is a burning-gas season.
Deep Holes and the Ninth Street Canals
Winter is the predictable season here and the least crowded. The fish move to deep channel swings and main-lake holes, and the canal systems β the Ninth Street canals at Leesburg in particular β concentrate them. Midday warmth produces the best bite window, which is a pleasant change from summer. Excellent bass fishing is also found in the Dead River.
The Harris Chain Access
Venetian Gardens (Ski Beach) in Leesburg off SR 44 is the main tournament launch. There are also ramps at Singletary Park off US 27 west of Leesburg, Hickory Point on SR 19 near the Howey bridge, and a small ramp on the east side of Little Lake Harris at Astatula.
Lake Harris and Little Lake Harris
Big Harris runs 13,788 acres and is the anchor of the chain. Little Lake Harris traditionally warms and turns on first in the spring and has a reputation for holding bigger average fish. The north-shore boat docks on Little Harris are a reliable midday pattern all year.
The Ninth Street Canals and the Dead River
Leesburg's canal system and the Dead River are where the chain concentrates fish in cold water, and both hold overlooked bass year round. The canals are also the only genuinely clear water on the chain, which makes them the exception to the stained-water rule everywhere else.
Lake Carlton, Dora and Beauclair
The smaller waters in the middle of the chain, connected by the cypress-lined Dora Canal. Carlton produced the offshore shellbar that won the 2024 Elite, and Beauclair and Dora have both been strong in recent tournament history. Worth the lock time if you have something on them.
The Harris Chain Bass Fishing FAQ
What lakes make up the Harris Chain?
Lake Harris and Little Lake Harris, Griffin, Eustis, Dora, Beauclair, Carlton and Yale, connected by canals, creeks and locks, with Lake Apopka accessible through a lock at the far end. Lake Harris is the biggest at 13,788 acres.
Where is the Harris Chain?
Lake County in central Florida, centred on Leesburg and Tavares, roughly an hour northwest of Orlando. The main tournament launch is Venetian Gardens in Leesburg.
Is the water clear on the Harris Chain?
No. It is fertile and mostly a stained green, and that is the case across most of the chain. The exceptions are the backs of the residential canals and the spring-fed creeks. If you like fishing light line in clear water you will need to change your approach here β these are big-fish lakes that reward stouter tackle.
How do you fish the Harris Chain offshore?
Hydrilla patches, shellbars, brushpiles and hard spots away from the bank. The offshore grass has grown back substantially since the drought years and now dominates tournament results even during the spawn. The 2024 Elite was won on a single seventy-five-yard shellbar using a deep crankbait, a Carolina rig and a hair jig.
Do I have to lock through to fish the whole chain?
To move between several of the lakes, yes, and it costs real time β the Apopka lock takes three boats at a time. Most anglers who do well here find productive water close to the launch rather than spending the day travelling.
When is the best time to fish the Harris Chain?
February through April for the prespawn and spawn, which is when the chain gives up its biggest fish and when most national events are scheduled. Late spring into early summer is the bluegill-bed window and is badly underrated. Winter is the most predictable fishing of the year and the least crowded.
What baits work best on the Harris Chain?
Flipping baits in the shallow Kissimmee grass in spring, topwater over bluegill beds in early summer, moving baits across the grass in fall, and slow bottom presentations in the deep holes and canals in winter. Offshore, a deep crankbait and a Carolina rig earn their place. Our full bait lineup covers all of it.
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes. A Florida freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, with short-term options for visitors. Statewide bass regulations apply across the chain.
Long Casts, Deep Water
Bomb-casting a hair jig at pressured offshore fish and keeping tension through a twenty-yard retrieve is a different discipline from flipping a reed line, and it needs a different rod. Level Rods builds both ends of that range, with the sensitivity to feel a soft bite at distance and the power to drive a hook at the end of a long cast.
