A cypress-lined tributary of the James, split by Walkers Dam into a still lake above and a tidal river below. Virginia's wildlife department names both among the state's best largemouth waters, and between them they offer two completely different ways to fish.
One River, Two Fisheries
The Chickahominy flows through eastern Virginia into the James, and Walkers Dam divides it into two distinct fisheries that need to be understood separately.
Above the dam is Chickahominy Lake — still water, cypress-lined, with lily pads, submerged vegetation, standing timber and blackwater stained by tannins. It fishes like a southern swamp lake and looks like one.
Below the dam the river is tidal. Current reverses through the day, bass reposition with it, and the fishing follows the same logic as the tidal James it feeds into. Virginia's Department of Wildlife Resources names the Chickahominy below Walkers Dam specifically as one of the state's top largemouth river fisheries, alongside the James below the fall line.
The cover on both sections is cypress and vegetation rather than rock or docks. Cypress trees and knees, lily pad fields, grass beds, laydowns and stumps. That makes it accuracy fishing — you are placing baits beside individual pieces of cover rather than covering water.
Water is stained to blackwater throughout, which shapes bait selection toward darker and more visible profiles and away from the clear-water finesse that works in western Virginia.
It is also a genuinely attractive place to fish. The cypress-lined stretches are among the most scenic bass water in Virginia, and much of the river feels considerably more remote than its proximity to Richmond and Williamsburg suggests.
Cypress, Pads and Tide
Four patterns cover the year. Each one pairs the technique with the baits we'd actually tie on.
Into the Cypress and the Pockets
Spring moves fish into the shallow pockets, the backs of the creeks and the cypress to spawn. Above the dam the lake warms first in the sheltered upper reaches; below it, fish push up the tidal creeks on the higher stages. This is the strongest season on both sections.
Pads, Mats and First Light
Summer is a topwater and heavy-cover game. Lily pad fields and vegetation mats hold fish through the heat, and the cypress provides shade. Below the dam, the falling tide is the productive stage, pulling bass out of the flooded cover onto reachable edges.
Cooling Water and Open Pockets
Autumn cools the water and brings fish out of the heaviest cover into the open pockets, the pad edges and the creek mouths. Bait concentrates and the fishing becomes considerably more forgiving than the summer punching game. It is the most comfortable season on this water.
Deeper Holes and Slow Baits
Winter concentrates fish in the deeper holes, the channel and the deeper tidal creek water, since there is nowhere else for them to go on water this shallow. Cold fronts have a pronounced effect. The upside is that the productive area shrinks to something you can actually fish thoroughly.
The Chickahominy Access
Public ramps serve both sections, with access to Chickahominy Lake above Walkers Dam and to the tidal river below it. Chickahominy Riverfront Park near Williamsburg is a convenient tidal access point, and Richmond and Williamsburg are both close.
The Cypress Lines
Cypress trees and knees along both sections, and the signature cover on this water. Accuracy fishing — you are placing a bait beside a specific trunk or knee from twenty feet, over and over. Shade in summer, ambush cover year round.
Chickahominy Lake Above Walkers Dam
Still, blackwater, cypress-lined water with pads, grass and timber. Fishes like a southern swamp lake and has no tidal component at all, which makes it the simpler of the two sections to learn.
The Tidal River Below the Dam
Named by Virginia's wildlife department among the state's top largemouth river fisheries. Current reverses through the day, creek mouths concentrate bait, and the deeper tidal creeks are the winter refuge. Fishes like the James it feeds into.

When is the best time to fish it?
Spring, when fish move into the cypress and the shallow pockets to spawn. Summer offers excellent early-morning topwater over the pads. Autumn is the most comfortable and the most forgiving.
What baits work best on the Chickahominy?

Do I need a fishing license?
Yes, a Virginia freshwater fishing license from the Department of Wildlife Resources. The lower river is tidal and becomes brackish further down, so check which licence applies to the section you intend to fish.
