The Belgrade Lakes are a connected chain in central Maine, west of Waterville — Great Pond, Long Pond, Messalonskee, East Pond, North Pond and Salmon Lake. They are close enough together that a trip here means choosing between them rather than committing to one.
The local characterisation is direct: smallmouth are king, with slab crappie the supporting cast. The chain has a long-standing reputation among New England anglers and a summer camp culture going back generations.
Each lake has its own character. Some are rockier and deeper, favouring smallmouth; others are shallower and weedier and hold largemouth. That variety is the practical advantage — when wind or conditions put one out of reach, another is usually fishable.
The structure across the chain is a mix of rocky points and shoals, weed beds, drop-offs and shoreline cover, with connecting streams and thoroughfares between several of the lakes that concentrate fish when water is moving.
This is a summer destination with substantial camp and recreational traffic through July and August. Early, late and the shoulder seasons are meaningfully quieter.
Maine's South Zone is open to bass year round under general law, with a limit of two fish of which only one may exceed fourteen inches. Rules differ by zone and by water — check current Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife regulations before you go.

Shallow Rock and Warming Bays
Spring comes late to central Maine and the shallower lakes in the chain warm first, which is a genuine advantage — you can follow the warmth from one water to the next. Smallmouth move onto rock and gravel; largemouth push into the weedy bays on the shallower lakes.
Pick Your Lake
Summer is the main season and the chain's variety is at its most useful. Rocky lakes hold smallmouth on points and drop-offs; weedier lakes hold largemouth in vegetation. Camp traffic is heaviest in July and August, so early starts and the smaller waters pay.
Heavy Fish, Empty Camps
Autumn empties the camps and brings the heaviest fish of the year. Smallmouth group on rock and feed hard before a long winter, and the weedier lakes fish well as vegetation breaks down and pulls largemouth onto the edges.
Ice
Central Maine freezes the chain solid and open-water bass fishing stops. Ice fishing is a serious local tradition here, particularly for the crappie the Belgrades are known for, but the bass season is ice-out to freeze-up.
The Belgrade Lakes Access
Public access serves several of the lakes in the chain, with the village of Belgrade Lakes between Great Pond and Long Pond as the natural base. Waterville and Augusta are both close for supplies and lodging.
Great Pond and Long Pond
The two largest and best known in the chain, with the village between them. Rock, drop-offs and weed in varying measure, and the natural starting point for a first visit.
The Connecting Thoroughfares
Streams and channels linking several of the lakes, concentrating fish when water is moving through them. Small water that fishes above its size and is often overlooked.
The Smaller Ponds
East Pond, North Pond and Salmon Lake — shallower, weedier and quieter than the big two. Where to go when wind or camp traffic makes the larger waters unpleasant.
